Odoo vs Shopify: which to choose?
Shopify does one thing very well: turnkey online selling, with transaction fees and a ceiling on customisation. Odoo connects the shop to your entire operation, stock and invoicing included. Shopify suits a brand that only sells. Odoo suits a business that sells and also runs its operations in one place.
Shopify is the benchmark for turnkey e-commerce. Odoo connects your shop to your entire business management. Two opposing philosophies. Here is an honest comparison of real cost, customisation and scalability, without the sales pitch.
E-commerce: closed SaaS or integrated system?

- Our verdict
Choosing between Odoo and Shopify for e-commerce is not a comparison of two online shops. It is a choice between two visions: a specialised SaaS platform that does one thing very well, and a complete management system in which the shop is just one module. The right choice depends entirely on what you sell and how you run your business.
Two opposing philosophies.
Shopify is a SaaS: you rent a turnkey shop, hosted and maintained by Shopify. It is simple, quick to launch and designed for a single purpose: selling online. Everything else (accounting, advanced inventory, CRM) goes through third-party apps, which are often paid.
Odoo is an ERP: the shop is one module among dozens (inventory, accounting, CRM, invoicing, purchasing). Your e-commerce is not an island, it is natively connected to your entire operation. More power, but a tool that needs to be shaped.
Key takeaway
Shopify optimises one building block: online sales. Odoo optimises the whole: sales are just one entry point into a system that also manages your stock, your invoices and your customers.
The real cost, all in.
This is where the comparison gets interesting. Shopify's advertised price is low, but the real cost climbs with paid apps (every advanced feature means a monthly subscription) and, depending on the plan, commissions on sales if you do not use Shopify Payments.
Odoo has a higher set-up cost at the start (the development), but no commission on your sales, and the e-commerce module is part of a system you own. Over time, and as volumes grow, the equation often flips. We go through budgets in detail in how much an Odoo website costs in Belgium.
| Criterion | Odoo | Shopify |
|---|---|---|
| Launch cost | Higher | Low |
| Monthly subscription | Under control | Grows with apps |
| Commission on sales | None | Depends on plan |
| Cost at high volume | Decreasing | High |
Customisation and design.
Shopify offers good themes and a template language (Liquid) that lets you go quite far. But you stay within the Shopify ecosystem, and deep customisation often requires apps or a specialist developer.
Odoo, hand-coded in QWeb, has virtually no design limits on the front end. An Odoo shop can be as polished as a bespoke brochure site, and that is our speciality. The trade-off: it takes an agency that masters Odoo front-end development, not just installation.
Integrated management, the real differentiator.
This is the decisive argument for Odoo. On Shopify, your shop lives on its own: to sync stock, accounting and CRM, you plug connectors between tools, with the risk of data getting out of sync that this implies.
In Odoo, an order updates the stock, generates the invoice, feeds the accounting and enriches the customer record, with no connector and no double entry. If you already manage (or soon will manage) stock, invoicing or B2B sales, this argument carries a lot of weight.
- Real-time stock shared between the shop, the warehouse and the point of sale.
- Invoicing and accounting handled automatically with every order.
- Built-in CRM: every buyer becomes a usable contact.
- B2B and B2C in the same instance, with separate prices and terms.
SEO and performance.
Both platforms can rank well. Shopify is solid on basic technical SEO. Odoo, when cleanly coded, gives finer control over the HTML, tags and schema markup. That is an advantage for complex catalogues and multilingual sites, a topic we also cover in Odoo vs WordPress.
Reference: Odoo's official documentation describes what the Website app handles natively for SEO. See Odoo, Search Engine Optimization, accessed in August 2026.
On performance, it all comes down to execution: a Shopify theme overloaded with apps can be slow, and so can a poorly coded Odoo. The advantage goes to whoever controls the code served to Googlebot.
Who is Shopify for, who is Odoo for?
Shopify is excellent if you want to launch a simple shop quickly, with no complex operations behind it, and you are happy to pay for apps to extend its features. It is a very good choice for a pure e-commerce player that wants to get to market fast.
Odoo is the obvious choice as soon as the shop is only one part of the business: real stock, invoicing, B2B, several sales channels, a need to centralise everything. If you are already on Odoo, the question does not even arise. Ready to get started? See building an Odoo e-commerce site.
Our verdict
Shopify sells online. Odoo runs a business in which online sales are one part. Choose according to one question: do I need a shop, or a system?
