Odoo vs Wix, the real contest.
Wix is enough for a first website: one afternoon, no skills required. It becomes a hindrance as soon as you aim for speed, fine-tuned SEO or a site that evolves with your business. The real difference is ownership: with Wix you rent a tool, with Odoo you own your website and your data.
Wix (and Squarespace) make building a website accessible to everyone. That is their strength, and their ceiling. Odoo plays in a different league: more demanding, but built to last and to grow. Here is when Wix is enough, and when it starts holding you back.
Consumer site builder or a site that grows?

Wix made website building accessible to everyone: drag and drop, results in an afternoon, no skills required. For a first website, that is often perfect. But as soon as a business wants speed, fine-tuned SEO or a site that grows into real business functions, the consumer website builder shows its limits. Here is an honest comparison.

Wix, simple by design.
Let's be fair: Wix does very well what it was built for. An intuitive interface, plenty of templates, a quick launch and hosting included. For a freelancer, a non-profit or a small showcase site that needs to be online without a development budget, it is an honest solution.
The problem is not Wix itself. It is what happens when your needs go beyond what a consumer website builder can offer. And that moment comes sooner than you think.
The glass ceiling of website builders.
Consumer website builders share three structural limits. First, the generated code: heavy, layered and hard to slim down, which slows everything. Then technical SEO: limited control over tags, structure and multilingual setup. Finally, scalability: a Wix site stays a website and never becomes a management system.
A slow website loses rankings and sales. It is a real issue, which we covered in is your Odoo website slow?, and it applies even more to builders crammed with elements.
Our take
A consumer website builder is excellent for getting started and frustrating when you want to grow. The day you want a truly fast site, a clean multilingual version or a link with your business management, you hit the ceiling.
Templates versus bespoke.
Wix offers attractive templates, but a template is still a template: other businesses use the same one, and deep customisation soon runs into the limits of the editor. You get a decent website, rarely one with a signature of its own.
A hand-coded Odoo website has no such constraint: every component is designed for your brand. We go into this in an Odoo website can be beautiful. Bespoke work takes more than an afternoon, but the result is genuinely yours.
A website that grows with you.
This is the fundamental difference. Wix is a destination: a nice showcase site, full stop. Odoo is a starting point: the same tool that hosts your website also runs your quotes, your CRM, your online shop and your invoicing, whenever you are ready.
| Criterion | Odoo | Wix |
|---|---|---|
| Ease of use | Demanding | Very easy |
| Performance / SEO | Fine control | Limited |
| Custom design | Unlimited | Limited by the editor |
| Growth into ERP | Built in | Impossible |
| Website ownership | Full | Tenant |
Rent or own.
With Wix, you rent: a monthly subscription, a site hosted on their servers and a difficult migration if you leave. The cost is low but recurring, and you never really own your platform.
With Odoo, the initial investment is higher, but the website lives in your own instance, which you control and can develop without a ceiling. We compare budgets in how much does an Odoo website cost in Belgium.
When Wix is enough, when to move to Odoo.
Stay with Wix if you need a small, simple showcase site with no plans to grow, a minimal budget and no business functions. For many modest projects, that is the sensible answer.
Move to Odoo as soon as your website becomes a strategic asset: speed and SEO that matter, a strong brand image, a need (even a future one) to connect the site to your business management. If you want a website that grows with your company rather than one you will rebuild in two years, the choice is clear. The same reasoning applies to other platforms: we explain it in Odoo vs WordPress.
