Building an Odoo online shop in Belgium.
An Odoo online shop makes sense when the shop needs to talk to your back office: stock, orders and invoicing in the same database, with no connector. For a Belgian SME, it handles French and Dutch, Bancontact and Belgian VAT out of the box. The budget depends mainly on the catalogue and the level of customisation.
Selling online seriously as a Belgian SME, without falling into the Shopify trap or the WooCommerce jungle. Here is the complete guide: stock integration, FR-NL multilingual, Bancontact payments, VAT, GDPR, real prices and timelines.

Selling online as a Belgian SME in 2026 means choosing between three worlds: the ease of Shopify, with its transaction fees and limits, the freedom of WooCommerce, with its 35 fragile plugins, or the Odoo integration, which connects your shop to your ERP. This article explains why the third route is often the best one in Belgium, and how to do it properly.
Why Odoo for a Belgian online shop.
A serious online shop is more than a nice-looking website. It is a shop connected to real stock, orders going out, accounts that update themselves, VAT being calculated, confirmation emails being sent and shipping labels being printed. Odoo's strength is that all of this is built in to the same tool as your website. Not three pieces of software syncing badly every hour, but one single ecosystem.
Reference: Odoo's official documentation details what the eCommerce app covers out of the box: catalogue, pricing, order management, customer accounts, payment providers and delivery. See Odoo, eCommerce, consulted in August 2026.
For a Belgian SME, that changes everything. You add a product in Odoo: it appears automatically in the shop, in the right category, with its price excluding and including VAT. An order comes in: the invoice is generated, stock goes down, the customer gets their email, and you see it all in real time on the same dashboard as your B2B orders.
Stock, orders, back office.
This is Odoo's number one argument against Shopify or WooCommerce. On those two platforms you have to plug in an ERP connector (often a paid one) to sync your stock and orders. The result: delays, duplicates, and stock levels on the site that no longer match what is actually in the warehouse. Worst case: a customer orders a product you no longer have.
With Odoo it is the other way round. The shop is in the same system as the stock. When a product drops to zero, the “Add to cart” button disappears automatically. When an order comes in, stock is reduced instantly. No plugin, no webhook, no delay. It is built in.
Real-life example
A Belgian food-tech client moved from WooCommerce to Odoo in 2025. Before: 2 sync errors a week between website stock and actual stock, with orders cancelled by hand. After: none in 18 months. That argument saved them a half-time admin role.
Multilingual, the Belgian way.
In Belgium, selling only in French cuts you off from around 60% of the market. Selling in FR/NL opens up the whole country. Adding English brings in expats and neighbouring countries. Multilingual is not optional here, and it is exactly where Odoo leaves the competition far behind.
Multilingual in Odoo is native and clean. You activate a language in the settings and automatically get URLs such as /nl/shop and /en/shop, hreflang tags generated on their own, sitemaps per language, and a back office to translate every product field. No WPML plugin crashing at every update. No parallel translation table drifting out of sync. Just an “FR” field and an “NL” field for each product.
Payment and Belgian VAT.
For payments, Odoo natively integrates the gateways that matter in Belgium: Mollie (the local reference, covering Bancontact, Visa, Mastercard and Apple Pay), Stripe and PayPal. Setup takes half a day. No external plugin.
VAT is even simpler. Odoo handles Belgian rules natively: 21% VAT by default, 6% for foodstuffs, intra-EU B2B exemption with automatic VIES validation, and OSS for B2C sales to other EU countries. Everything is configured in the back office, and the shop automatically applies the right VAT based on the customer's country.
Odoo is not just another e-commerce platform. It is an ERP with a built-in shop. That difference changes everything.

GDPR and Belgian compliance.
Every Belgian online shop has to tick four boxes to be compliant. Here is the checklist we apply on every WebNest project.
The 2026 compliance checklist
- GDPR-compliant cookie bannerRefusing must be as easy as accepting. No lone “Accept” button. Choice by category. Consent is stored.
- Complete legal noticeName, company number (BCE/KBO), address, email, VAT number, applicable law. Page accessible from every screen.
- Clear privacy policyWhich cookies, which data is collected, retention period, rights of access and erasure.
- Terms and conditions of saleDelivery times, payment methods, 14-day returns, Belgian legal guarantees.
All these pages can be set up in Odoo in a few hours. On WebNest sites, we provide them with templates suited to Belgian SMEs. There is no need to hire a specialist law firm to start out compliant.
What drives the budget.
There is no standard figure for an Odoo online shop. It depends on four main variables that are better clarified at the start of the brief than guessed at.
- Catalogue size. Entering 30 products by hand is a different scope from importing 500 products from a supplier. The import, the category structure, the variants: it all adds up.
- Languages enabled. One language is enough to get started. FR + NL is almost a must in Belgium. Adding English reaches expats and neighbouring countries. Each language adds hours of configuration and proofreading.
- Level of visual customisation. A clean shop using a well-styled Odoo template costs noticeably less than one with a custom mega menu, a redesigned product page and bespoke animations.
- Third-party integrations. Mollie is enough for 80% of Belgian SMEs. If you need an external ERP, a booking system or a specific carrier connector, each link adds hours.
Funding tip
The Brussels-Capital Region offers a digital transformation grant covering up to 50% of the cost for start-ups. On a serious project, that is a substantial subsidised share. We can point you to an expert who handles the application with no upfront cost to you.
Yes, it is a serious investment. But it is one that pays back month after month, in time saved on admin, in conversion and in customer trust. A cheap, badly built online shop almost always costs more after 18 months than a solid one amortised over 4 years.
